Maghull lies on flat farmland just north of Liverpool, in Merseyside. On a map, the town is mainly suburban: curving residential roads, cul-de-sacs and green spaces fill the land between its main routes. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal runs through the town, adding a long, smooth line across the street pattern.
Transport is a strong feature of the plan. The Merseyrail line runs north–south with stations at Maghull and Maghull North. On the eastern edge, the M58 and M57 motorways meet near a large junction. Beyond them, open fields stretch toward the West Lancashire plain. Frank Hornby, the inventor of Meccano, made his home in Maghull.
