Te mapa
Malda, whose urban centre is formally called English Bazar, lies in northern West Bengal on the banks of the Mahananda River, not far from its meeting with the Ganges. On a map the town spreads along the river. It has a dense older centre, a railway line and highway running north to south, and open countryside all around.
The district is famous across India for its mangoes, grown in extensive orchards around the town, and varieties such as Fazli and Lakshmanbhog are closely associated with Malda. South of the town lie the ruins of Gaur, once the capital of Bengal, and to the north the remains of Pandua, with mosques and gateways from the medieval sultanate.
A Malda map poster captures a town shaped by water and orchards. The Mahananda curves along one side of the composition, and the grid of streets and markets thickens toward the centre. The edges soften into a patchwork of fields, ponds and plantations that gives the print an open, rural rhythm.
The river runs along the town and gives the map a natural curve and a clear edge. It separates the urban area from the countryside beyond.
Orchards surround the town in a fine pattern of plots and paths. They record the fruit that has made the district known across India.
South of the town, roads lead toward the ruins of Gaur, the former capital of Bengal. They extend the map's reach into the region's long history.
