Te mapa
Baharampur, also known as Berhampore, lies on the east bank of the Bhagirathi River in Murshidabad district, West Bengal. It is the district headquarters. The town runs north to south along the river, with a dense older core, and a large rectangular open space at its heart that stands out clearly on the map.
That open space dates from the town's early colonial history. After the Battle of Plassey, the East India Company established a cantonment here, laid out around a large parade square with barracks. The old Nawabi capital of Murshidabad lies a short distance upriver, and the area is still known for its silk.
A Baharampur map poster shows the river on one side, the large square near the centre, and the network of lanes and ponds spreading inland. It is a town where two different histories are visible in its layout: the cantonment's geometry and the organic growth of a Bengal river town.
A large rectangular open space surrounded by former barracks and institutions sits at the centre of town. It is the most geometric feature on the map.
The river runs along the town's western edge. It gives the poster a strong flowing boundary, and the streets follow its course.
Roads and settlement stretch north along the river toward the old capital of Murshidabad. This links Baharampur to the historic heart of the region.
