Mansfield lies between Columbus and Cleveland, just off Interstate 71. From above, its downtown is a small, regular grid centred on a public square, and the surrounding neighbourhoods spread out over gently rolling land. Rail lines cross the city at angles to the street grid.
The terrain is hillier than much of Ohio, so outer streets curve with the ground, and parks and wooded ravines break up the built areas. Kingwood Center Gardens, a large estate with formal gardens, forms a green block west of downtown.
