Te mapa
Masantol is a municipality in Pampanga, in the Central Luzon lowlands, close to where the region's rivers reach the northern edge of Manila Bay. From above, water shapes everything. Rivers and creeks divide the land into strips and islands, and the neat rectangles of fishponds cover large parts of the map, giving it an unusual, almost woven texture.
The town's built areas follow the higher ground along the waterways, so settlements appear as lines of houses and roads beside the rivers rather than a single dense block. Boats have long been part of daily travel here, and fishing and aquaculture are central to local life. The terrain is flat and very close to sea level, so the area is used to floods.
A Masantol map poster shows this delicate balance between water and land in clear black and white. It suits families from Pampanga who have moved abroad, as well as anyone with a connection to the delta. The geometry of the fishponds and the curving river channels make a composition that looks quite unlike a typical town plan.
Several rivers and creeks wind through the municipality, cutting the land into separate pieces and carrying much of the area's daily traffic by boat.
Large areas are divided into rectangular fishponds, which appear on the map as a regular grid of water and dykes, a rare and striking pattern.
Houses and roads follow the banks of the waterways, so the built parts of Masantol appear as long lines rather than a compact centre.
