Te mapa
Massawa is Eritrea's main port on the Red Sea, and it has one of the more unusual layouts on the coast. The old town occupies Massawa Island, and the neighbouring island of Taulud lies between it and the mainland. Long causeways link the three, so from above the city looks like a chain of land pieces strung across the water.
The old town was built over centuries of Ottoman and Egyptian rule, and later Italian, with houses of coral stone, arcades and a dense pattern of narrow lanes. On a map, the island core is a tight, irregular weave of streets, clearly different from the wider roads on Taulud and the mainland.
The city was heavily damaged during Eritrea's war of independence, and many of its historic buildings still show it. Offshore, the Dahlak Archipelago spreads across the sea. A Massawa map poster is defined by water: islands, causeways, harbour basins and the long, pale line of the Red Sea coast.
Massawa Island holds the historic core, a close weave of narrow lanes and coral-stone buildings packed onto a small piece of land in the bay.
Two long causeways run across the shallow water to link Massawa Island, Taulud and the mainland, forming clean straight lines through the harbour.
Port quays and sheltered basins shape the waterline around the islands. They give the coast sharp, built edges next to the natural shore.

Koteā ko Massawa
Few port cities have a shape as clear as Massawa's, with its islands and causeways reading at a glance. For Eritreans at home and abroad, and for anyone who knows the Red Sea coast, it makes a striking and personal picture.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, and choose Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Sand suits the coast especially well. The digital files cost $9 and come in six sizes, with no watermark.
