Te mapa
Matsuura lies on the northern coast of Kyushu in Nagasaki Prefecture, where the land breaks into steep headlands, narrow inlets and offshore islands. On a map the city is less a single town than a chain of settlements strung along the water, linked by a coastal road and railway that thread between the hills and the sea.
The city is one of Japan's well-known fishing ports, especially for horse mackerel, and its harbours form the busiest parts of the map. Offshore, the island of Takashima is known for underwater finds from the Mongol invasion fleet of 1281, which was wrecked in these waters by a storm, a story still tied closely to the area.
A Matsuura map poster emphasises this intricate edge between land and water. Bays reach deep inland, piers and breakwaters mark each harbour, and the islands across the strait add weight to the lower part of the design. In black and white, the coastline becomes a detailed, almost calligraphic line.
Breakwaters and piers enclose small harbours along the coast, each one a compact cluster of streets and quays set against the steep green hills behind it.
The island lying offshore is linked to the story of the 1281 Mongol fleet, whose wreckage has been studied in the surrounding waters, and it anchors the seaward side of the map.
Headlands, coves and narrow inlets give the coast an irregular, finely broken shape that becomes the dominant line on the poster.

Koteā ko Matsuura
Matsuura is a place where life has always faced the sea, and a map shows that relationship better than almost any image. It suits anyone with roots on this coast, or someone who remembers the harbours from a trip through Kyushu.
Personalise the title, add a date or a short subtitle, and adjust the coordinates line. Then pick one of five styles, from Classic black & white and Noir to Paper, Blueprint and Sand, to match your space.
