Medicine Hat sits in southeastern Alberta, where the South Saskatchewan River has cut a wide valley into the flat prairie. The downtown lies on the valley floor beside the river, and newer neighbourhoods spread across the upland plateau above.
The coulees give the map its character. These steep-sided ravines cut into the city, and streets stop at their edges, so the built-up area breaks into separate sections joined by a few roads. Seven Persons Creek winds through the southern part of town and adds a thinner, twisting line to the pattern.
Natural gas reserves beneath the city earned it the nickname the Gas City, and Rudyard Kipling famously described it as having all hell for a basement.
