Te mapa
Megarine lies in the Oued Righ valley of the Algerian Sahara, just north of Touggourt. The valley is a chain of oases stretching across the desert, and Megarine is one of them: a compact town set beside extensive palm groves, with the open sand of the Sahara beyond.
Date palms are the heart of the oasis economy here, as across the Oued Righ, and the groves are irrigated by water drawn from underground aquifers. Roads link the town with Touggourt and the other oases of the valley, following the long north-south line of the depression.
A Megarine map poster makes the contrast between settlement, palm grove and desert its main theme. The streets form a dense knot, the groves spread as a finely patterned area around them, and the desert remains almost blank. In black and white, the composition is spare and quietly dramatic, the essence of an oasis seen from above.
Irrigated date palm plantations surround the town, their plots and channels forming a finely patterned area between the streets and the open desert.
The built-up area is dense and closely packed, with narrow streets designed for shade, forming a tight cluster in the middle of the map.
The main road through the valley links Megarine with Touggourt and neighbouring oases, drawing a long line through the desert on the poster.
