Te mapa
Melbourne sits on the mainland shore of the Indian River Lagoon on Florida's Atlantic coast, in the area known as the Space Coast. From above, water defines the city. The long, narrow lagoon runs north to south, and beyond it lies a slender barrier island with beaches facing the ocean. Causeways cross the lagoon to connect the two sides.
The present city joins two historic communities, the original Melbourne and Eau Gallie to the north, which merged in 1969. Each kept a small historic core near the water, while newer neighbourhoods spread west across flat land in a pattern of long straight roads and curving suburban streets. Melbourne Orlando International Airport and the Florida Institute of Technology campus add large open shapes.
A Melbourne map poster shows a city stretched between lagoon, barrier island and inland suburbs. The parallel bands of water and land give the composition a strong vertical structure, and the causeways add clean connecting lines. It suits people who live on the Space Coast, Florida Tech alumni and anyone who remembers watching launches from this stretch of shore.
The long lagoon separates the mainland from the barrier island. This wide band of water runs north to south and is the poster's dominant natural feature.
Across the causeways, a narrow barrier island faces the Atlantic, and its thin strip of land gives the map a crisp outer edge along the ocean.
Downtown Melbourne and Eau Gallie each have a small historic centre by the water, visible as denser clusters of streets within the wider suburban pattern.
