Mercedes lies in the Pampas west of Buenos Aires, on the flat, fertile grassland of Buenos Aires Province. It began in the eighteenth century as a frontier fort, and it grew in the Spanish colonial pattern, with a regular grid of square blocks arranged around a central plaza.
From above, the grid is almost perfectly even, block after block across flat ground. The Luján River provides the one natural exception, winding past the town in loose curves and bordered by green parkland. Beyond the last streets, the countryside turns into large rectangular fields, the classic landscape of the Pampas.
