Métouia lies in southern Tunisia, a short distance north-west of Gabès and close to the coast of the Gulf of Gabès. The landscape is one of the most distinctive in the Mediterranean, where coastal oases meet the sea. From above, the town is a compact group of low-rise streets with palm groves and cultivated plots around it.
The street pattern is irregular in the older parts, with narrow lanes and inward-facing courtyard houses, and more regular in newer districts. Main roads connect Métouia to Gabès and to the coastal route north. On a black-and-white print, the contrast between the dense town, the textured oasis plots and the open plain is clear and striking.
