Te mapa
Minakami is a town in the far north of Gunma prefecture, in the mountains that separate the Kantō plain from the Sea of Japan side of Honshu. The map is shaped entirely by terrain. Settlements and roads squeeze into narrow valleys, the upper Tone River runs through them, and steep forested slopes fill everything else.
The area is known for its hot spring towns, for Mount Tanigawa and its dramatic climbing routes, and for rafting on the fast water of the Tone, one of Japan's longest rivers, which rises in these mountains. In winter, deep snow makes Minakami a well-known ski destination, and Jōmō-Kōgen station on the Jōetsu Shinkansen connects it with Tokyo.
A Minakami map poster turns this mountain landscape into a composition of threads: the river, the roads and railway following it, and the small clusters of onsen streets along the valleys. The open space of the mountains around them gives the map a sense of scale.
The Tone River runs through the town's valleys near its source, and its winding course sets the direction for almost every road and settlement.
Hot spring villages sit in small, dense groups of streets along the valleys, scattered like beads along the river and roads.
The railway and main roads follow the valleys closely, running parallel to the river and showing how tightly the mountains constrain movement.
