Te mapa
Minamiawaji takes up the southern part of Awaji Island in the Seto Inland Sea. Its map is mostly land and shoreline rather than dense streets. A central plain of rice and vegetable fields is crossed by small roads and dotted with villages, while hills rise toward the southern coast and the sea surrounds almost everything.
In the southwest, the island tapers toward the Naruto Strait, where tidal currents create well-known whirlpools. The Ōnaruto Bridge crosses the strait to Shikoku, and on the map its straight span stands out against the open water. The rest of the coastline alternates between small harbours, beaches and steep headlands.
The city is known for its sweet Awaji onions and for Awaji ningyō jōruri, a puppet theatre tradition that continues on the island. A Minamiawaji map poster shows a rural place defined by its edges: sea on three sides, a bridge to another island and fields spread across the middle.
This suspension bridge links Awaji to Shikoku across the Naruto Strait. Its direct line over the water is one of the clearest man-made features on the map.
The narrow channel between the two islands is known for tidal whirlpools. On the poster, it appears as a tight passage where the two coastlines almost meet.
Flat farmland covers the middle of the city, divided into a fine pattern of small roads and irrigation lines between scattered villages.
