Te mapa
Minusinsk stands on the right bank of the Yenisei River in southern Siberia, in the wide Minusinsk Basin surrounded by the Sayan mountains. From above, the river dominates the map. The Yenisei splits into branches and channels around wooded islands, and the town fits in beside them.
The old part of town follows a regular grid of streets typical of Siberian district towns, with wooden houses and brick merchant buildings. Newer neighbourhoods extend on higher ground, and a bridge leads across the river toward Abakan and the Khakas plains. The water, islands and floodplain make the town's edge soft and complicated.
Minusinsk was founded in the eighteenth century and became a place of exile, including for several Decembrists. Its regional museum, founded by Nikolai Martyanov in the 1870s, is one of the oldest in Siberia. The basin's mild climate is known for good harvests, and Minusinsk tomatoes are famous across the country. A Minusinsk map poster shows a quiet town shaped by its great river.
The river divides into several branches around wooded islands. They make the most striking natural feature on the map and frame the town's riverside.
The historic district follows a regular street plan of long, straight blocks, typical of Siberian towns in the nineteenth century.
The road bridge crosses the Yenisei toward Abakan. It is a single clear line that ties the town to the other bank.
