Te mapa
Mitchell is a city in southeastern South Dakota, on the open prairie. Its plan follows the classic pattern of a railroad town: a rectangular street grid, a downtown along Main Street, and rail lines crossing the city. Around it, country roads divide the farmland into a vast checkerboard of square-mile sections.
Its best-known building is the Corn Palace, whose facade is redecorated each year with murals made from corn and other grains. To the north, Lake Mitchell, a reservoir on Firesteel Creek, adds an irregular shoreline to the otherwise straight geometry. Interstate 90 passes along the south side of the city before continuing west across the state.
A Mitchell map poster makes the most of this clarity. The grid fills the frame evenly, the lake breaks it with a soft curve, and the interstate draws a firm line below. It is a small-scale portrait of the Great Plains: orderly, spacious and shaped by the railroad and the surrounding farms.
Straight streets meet at right angles across the city. The densest blocks are around the downtown commercial strip on Main Street, where the Corn Palace stands.
The reservoir on Firesteel Creek, north of town, has the only irregular shoreline on the map. Its curving edges stand out against the straight roads around it.
Beyond the city limits, country roads follow the land survey grid. They mark out regular square miles of farmland, which makes the plains easy to read from above.
