Te mapa
Santa Cruz de Mompox, usually called Mompós, lies on a large island in the Magdalena River in northern Colombia. On a map the town is long and narrow, stretched along the Brazo de Mompox, the river channel it faces. Its main streets run parallel to the water, crossed by short lanes, so the whole historic centre reads as a series of lines following the bank.
Mompós was an important river port in the colonial era, and its well-preserved historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. When the river's main course shifted away and traffic moved elsewhere, the town was left largely untouched, which is why its colonial layout survives so completely. Simón Bolívar is said to have credited Mompós for his glory.
A Mompós map poster shows the town's close relationship with the water: the river channel sweeping along one side, the parallel streets following it, and marshes, lagoons and river arms spreading across the island beyond. It is one of the clearest examples of a town shaped entirely by its river.
The river channel runs along the edge of the historic centre, a broad curving band of water that defines the entire orientation of the town.
The main colonial streets run alongside the river rather than away from it, forming long lines linked by short cross streets.
Beyond town, the island is laced with lagoons, marshes and side channels, giving the margins of the map a rich, watery texture.

Koteā ko Mompós
Mompós is a place people travel far to see, and its riverside plan is as distinctive as its colonial facades. A map of it suits travellers, lovers of Colombian literature and anyone with family roots on the Magdalena.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps using Mompox or a travel date, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Paper gives the colonial streets an old, archival feel.
