Monroe sits in southeastern Michigan on the western shore of Lake Erie, between Detroit and Toledo. The River Raisin runs through the city from west to east before reaching the lake, and from above it splits Monroe into northern and southern halves joined by a series of bridges.
The city is known for the River Raisin National Battlefield Park, which marks battles of the War of 1812 fought here in January 1813. Monroe is also closely linked with George Armstrong Custer, who lived in the town, and an equestrian statue of him stands downtown.
