Te mapa
Mpulungu lies at the far southern end of Lake Tanganyika, in Zambia's Northern Province. On the map, the shoreline is the main feature. The town follows the edge of the water, with a small harbour and streets climbing a short distance inland before the ground rises into the hills around the lake. Past the built-up area, the land is mostly open, cut by a few roads heading south.
Mpulungu is Zambia's only port. Boats connect it with towns along Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, making it an important link for trade and travel. Fishing is also central to local life. Lake Tanganyika is one of the longest and deepest lakes in the world, and its size shapes everything about the town.
A Mpulungu map poster is mostly about the contrast between land and water. The lake fills a large part of the design as a calm, empty area, with the town running along its edge. That simple, open layout gives the poster plenty of breathing space and makes it feel very different from a typical dense city map.
The shoreline curves around the town and forms its outer edge. On the poster, the lake is a wide, open area that balances the smaller street pattern.
As Zambia's only port, Mpulungu has a working harbour for boats crossing the lake. It is a small but important shape along the waterfront.
Just behind the town, the land rises steeply from the lake. The street pattern stays close to the water before giving way to open, hilly ground.

A map of Mpulungu speaks to anyone who has lived by the lake, worked in the port or travelled across Tanganyika from here. It captures a town that is defined as much by water as by land.
