Muang Xay, often called Oudomxay, is the capital of Oudômxai province in the mountains of northern Laos. The town fills a narrow valley floor, and from above it is long and slender, strung along a small river and the main road. Steep, forested hills press in on both sides, and the side streets run only as far as the slopes allow.
Its importance comes from its position. Several major roads meet here, linking the north of Laos with China, Luang Prabang and the Mekong. The town has grown as a trading and transport hub rather than a tourist centre. On a hill above the centre stands a gilded stupa, reached by a long stairway and looking out over the valley.
A Muang Xay map poster shows a town shaped almost entirely by its valley. The meeting of roads and the thin line of the river give the layout a clear structure, while the hills around it stay open and quiet. It suits anyone who travelled overland through northern Laos and remembers the stop at this hill-country junction.
The town stretches along the valley floor between steep slopes. This gives it a narrow, elongated outline that follows the path of the river.
Major routes from several directions meet in the town centre. This star of lines explains why Muang Xay grew where it did.
A stupa on a hill above the centre is reached by a stairway. Its site sits at the edge of the built-up area and overlooks the valley.

Northern Laos is a place many travellers cross slowly by road, and junction towns like Muang Xay become part of the memory of that trip. A map keeps the town in its valley exactly as it lay.
