Te mapa
Mulavukad is an island panchayat in the backwaters of Kochi in Kerala, just across the water from the Ernakulam waterfront. Water dominates its map. The land breaks into islands and narrow strips separated by channels, and the shorelines are irregular, notched with inlets and small jetties. The whole area reads as a scatter of green shapes set in a wide harbour.
Bolgatty Island, part of Mulavukad, is home to Bolgatty Palace, built by the Dutch in the eighteenth century and later used as a British residency. Since the Goshree bridges opened in the early 2000s, the islands have had a road link to the city. The bridges cross the channels in long, straight strokes, the firmest lines in an otherwise fluid landscape.
A Mulavukad map poster is more water than land, and that is its appeal. Thin roads run along the length of each island, bridges span the gaps between them, and broad harbour channels fill the space. Together they give the print a light, open composition, quite unlike a typical town plan, that works especially well in the Blueprint and Sand styles.
A chain of bridges links the islands to each other and to Ernakulam. On the map they are the straightest lines, crossing open water in confident strokes.
The island that holds the Dutch-built Bolgatty Palace sits close to the city waterfront. Its grounds and shoreline make a compact, recognisable shape among the channels.
Wide and narrow channels separate the islands, giving the map its broken, archipelago-like outline. Water surrounds every road and settlement.
