Te mapa
Munakata lies on the northern coast of Kyushu, roughly halfway between Fukuoka and Kitakyushu. Its map combines a coastline of sandy beaches and small fishing harbours with a plain of fields and residential districts inland, while low hills rise to the south. The railway and main roads run through the inland side, where most of the modern town has grown.
The city is best known for Munakata Taisha, a group of shrines dedicated to three goddesses. Together with the island of Okinoshima far out at sea, where access is strictly limited, they form a UNESCO World Heritage site listed in 2017. Oshima, a smaller island closer to the coast, is also part of the city.
A Munakata map poster brings sea, plain and hills together in one frame. The shoreline gives the composition a clear edge, while the neighbourhoods inland show how the city has grown between the coast and the railway, with the wooded shrine grounds as a quiet open space among them.
A long, gently curving shoreline runs along the north of the city, with beaches and small harbours giving the map a clean, open boundary.
Hetsu-miya, the main shrine of Munakata Taisha, sits on the plain inland, its wooded precinct appearing as a calm open area among fields and houses.
The main line between Fukuoka and Kitakyushu crosses the inland part of the city, and the densest neighbourhoods have grown up along it.

Visitors to the shrines, students at the city's university and families who have settled between the two large cities of northern Kyushu all have reason to keep this map. Its coast and sacred sites give it a quiet sense of place.
