Myanaung lies on the Irrawaddy River in the northern part of Myanmar's Ayeyarwady Region, where the river is still a single broad channel before it divides into the delta. On the map, the river is by far the largest feature: a wide band of water with sandbanks and islands shifting along its course.
The town extends along the bank, with the main streets running roughly parallel to the river and shorter lanes connecting them to the waterfront. For a long time, river transport shaped life here, and the layout still reflects that orientation towards the water rather than towards the land.
