Te mapa
Myoko lies in the southwest of Niigata Prefecture, close to the border with Nagano, in one of the snowiest parts of Japan. The map is dominated by relief. The main town area follows the valley, with streets and a railway line running along it, while to the west the land rises sharply towards Mount Myōkō, and the roads become fewer and more winding.
The area is known as Myōkō Kōgen, a highland resort area with ski fields and hot-spring villages such as Akakura Onsen on the lower slopes of the mountain. Heavy winter snowfall has made it a popular destination for skiers from Japan and abroad, and in summer the same slopes are used for hiking.
A Myoko map poster shows a Japanese mountain town in a single frame. The dense streets in the valley, the thin railway line and the scattered resort villages higher up form a clear gradient from town to mountain. In black and white, the mountain side becomes an open, quiet space that emphasises the height of the landscape.
The main settlement stretches along the valley floor, where streets, the railway and the main road run parallel in a narrow band.
To the west, the land rises towards the volcano, and the road network thins into winding routes leading up to the resort areas.
Small clusters of streets higher up mark the hot-spring and ski villages, separate from the main town and surrounded by open mountainside.

Koteā ko Myoko
The map suits skiers who return every winter, hikers who know the mountain in summer and families from the area. It is a calm, minimal souvenir of powder snow and hot springs.
