Te mapa
Nagaoka lies in the middle of Niigata Prefecture on the Shinano, the longest river in Japan. The river crosses the city from south to north, broad and braided in places, and long bridges connect the centre to the western districts. On a map, the central area sits on the east bank around the Shinkansen station, and rice paddies pattern the plain all around it.
Air raids in 1945 destroyed much of the city centre, and it was rebuilt afterwards. That is partly why its core has straighter, more regular streets than many older Japanese towns. Mergers with neighbouring towns have since made Nagaoka very large, reaching into the mountains to the east and out to the Sea of Japan coast. Its winters bring heavy snow.
Each August the riverbanks host the Nagaoka Fireworks Festival, counted among the three great fireworks displays of Japan, with shells launched over the Shinano. The city is also the birthplace of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto. A Nagaoka map poster focuses on the river and the centre, where the broad banks and bridges give the composition its clear shape.

Several long bridges span the Shinano. They join the station district on the east bank to the homes and farmland on the western side.
Around the station, the post-war street pattern is noticeably regular. Its straight roads and blocks read cleanly at poster scale compared with the looser roads further out.

Koteā ko Nagaoka
People remember Nagaoka by its seasons: the August fireworks over the river, the deep winter snow, the green paddies in summer. A map poster holds the whole setting at once. It suits someone who grew up there as well as someone who came for the festival.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line are yours to change, so a festival year or a family name fits easily. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Then download the files for $9, or order a matte print with an optional wooden frame.
