Te mapa
Sado lies off the coast of Niigata Prefecture and is one of Japan's larger outlying islands. Its shape is distinctive. The Osado range runs along the north, the lower Kosado hills along the south, and between them lies the Kuninaka Plain, a flat corridor of rice fields. On a map the two ridges look like brackets, and the plain reads as an open band where roads and settlements gather.
Ferries from Niigata arrive at Ryotsu, on the plain's northeastern shore beside Lake Kamo, a lagoon joined to the sea. On the other side of the island, Ogi sits on the southern coast, known for its taraibune, round tub boats once used to gather shellfish among the rocks. Coastal roads trace most of the shoreline, and the mountain interiors stay nearly blank.
For centuries Sado was a place of exile. The Noh master Zeami, the Buddhist monk Nichiren and the retired Emperor Juntoku were all sent there. Later its gold mines around Aikawa became among the most productive in Japan, and the Sado Island Gold Mines were added to UNESCO's World Heritage list in 2024. A Sado Island map poster gathers mountains, plain and coast into one large, balanced shape.

A brackish lagoon beside Ryotsu, separated from the sea by a narrow strip of town. It is one of the clearest inland water shapes on the island.
On the western shore below the Osado range, the old gold-mining district sits where the mountains meet the sea, marked by a compact town grid.

Koteā ko Sado Island
Sado suits people drawn to Japan's quieter edges, such as Kodo drum audiences, hikers, and anyone who has taken the ferry across from Niigata. The island's double-ridge outline is recognisable even without labels, and it holds up at every print size.
Add the island's name in Latin script or a line of your own, with coordinates beneath. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The $9 download includes 300 DPI PNG and print-ready PDF files, with no watermark.
