Te mapa
Niigata sits where the Shinano River, the longest river in Japan, reaches the Sea of Japan. The river divides the city centre in two, and the stone-arched Bandai Bridge has long been the symbol of the crossing. On a map the Shinano is the main line, wide and curving, with the older districts gathered along both banks near its mouth.
Niigata was one of the ports opened to foreign trade in the 1860s. The harbour still shapes the coast, and ferries leave from it for Sado Island. The seafront is long and straight, backed by dunes and pine forests. Inland, the city spreads across a flat plain of rice fields, lagoons and drainage channels.
Many canals once crossed the old centre. Most were filled in to make roads during the twentieth century, but traces remain in the street pattern. A Niigata map poster brings together river, sea and plain, showing a city defined by water even where the water itself has gone.

The historic bridge crosses the Shinano in the centre, linking the station side with the old port district on the opposite bank.
A straight coastline runs along the Sea of Japan, backed by pine-covered dunes, giving the map a clean northern edge and a band of green.

Koteā ko Niigata
Niigata is known for its rice and sake, and for the river that runs through everything. For people from the region, or anyone who has passed through on the way to Sado, the map is a quiet, graphic reminder of the city.
