Six bastions and their outworks form a jagged star around the town. It is one of the clearest examples of bastioned fortification anywhere in the Netherlands.

Naarden Map Poster & Print
Naarden is one of the best-preserved fortified towns in Europe. From above it is unmistakable. The old town is enclosed by a twelve-pointed star of ramparts, formed by six bastions with outworks, and is surrounded by a double ring of moats. Inside the walls, the streets form a compact, almost regular grid centred on the large Grote Kerk, whose tower rises above the town.
The fortifications date mainly from the seventeenth century and were part of the Dutch Water Line defences. Naarden later became a garrison town, and today the Fortress Museum occupies part of the works. The Czech scholar Comenius is buried here. Since 2016 Naarden has belonged to the municipality of Gooise Meren, and the Gooimeer lake lies just to the north.

Outside the moats, newer neighbourhoods and the Naarden-Bussum area spread outward, but the fortress remains the unmistakable centre of the image.

Double moat
Two rings of water surround the defences and follow every angle of the star. In black and white they give the fortress a strong, layered outline.
Grid within the walls
Inside the fortress, streets form a tidy, near-regular pattern around the Grote Kerk. It is a small, ordered town inside a precise geometric frame.
