Te mapa
Nakatsukuma lies on the Saga Plain in northern Kyushu, one of the flattest farming landscapes in Japan. From above it has almost no relief. Instead the map is made of lines: roads, farm lanes and the narrow irrigation creeks that criss-cross the plain and have long been part of how it is farmed.
Houses gather in clusters along the roads and waterways, and rice paddies spread between them in a mostly rectangular pattern. The creeks do not always follow the grid. They wander, split and rejoin, adding soft curves to what would otherwise be a very orderly composition.
A Nakatsukuma map poster is an image of rural Kyushu at its most graphic. It shows a network of fine lines on flat land, with a settlement defined by water management more than by any single street. It works as a quiet, abstract piece while still describing a real and specific place.
Narrow waterways thread through the whole frame, dividing the land into irregular sections. They are the signature feature of the Saga Plain and give the poster its texture.
Between the settlements, field boundaries make a patchwork of mostly rectangular shapes. The result is a calm, repeating pattern in black and white.
Houses gather along roads and creeks rather than around one centre, forming small linear groups spread across the flat farmland.

Koteā ko Nakatsukuma
For people from Saga, a map of this plain brings back the long straight roads and the water running beside them. For others, it is simply a beautiful abstract pattern taken from real ground.
You can personalise the title, the subtitle and the coordinates line. There are five styles to choose from. Blueprint emphasises the lines of the waterways, while Paper gives the plain a gentle, printed-page feel.
