Néa Filadélfeia lies in the north of Athens, a few kilometres from the city centre. It was founded in the 1920s by Greek refugees from Philadelphia in Asia Minor, now Alaşehir in Turkey. The town takes its name from their home city. On a map it is a dense, regular grid of streets bordered by major roads and the Kifisos corridor to the west.
Its most striking feature is the Alsos, a large pine grove that forms a broad green block within the grid. It is one of the largest parks in Athens. Next to it stands the stadium of AEK Athens, the football club also founded by refugees from Asia Minor. The club's new ground was named in memory of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople.
A Néa Filadélfeia map poster brings these parts together. There is the dense suburban mesh, the unbroken green of the grove and the large oval of the stadium. The grid itself reflects the history of the town, which was planned quickly to house refugees. It remains one of the clearer street plans in greater Athens.
The large pine grove occupies a whole section of the town. It appears as a broad, calm space among closely packed city blocks.
The home ground of AEK Athens stands beside the grove. Its rounded outline is one of the clearest landmarks on the map and a symbol of the town's refugee heritage.
Straight, evenly spaced streets fill most of the town. The layout was planned for the settlement of the 1920s and still gives Néa Filadélfeia its orderly shape.

Koteā ko Néa Filadélfeia
Many families in Néa Filadélfeia are descended from Asia Minor refugees, and many AEK supporters feel the town is theirs too. A map of it carries that shared history in a simple form: grove, stadium and streets.
