Te mapa
Néa Ionía is a municipality in the northern part of the Athens urban area. It was founded in the 1920s by refugees from Asia Minor after the Greco-Turkish War, and its name, New Ionia, recalls the coast they left behind. Many of its early settlers worked in textile workshops and factories, which shaped the district for decades.
On the map, Néa Ionía is a dense patchwork of streets, mostly regular blocks broken by squares and a few larger avenues. Line 1 of the Athens Metro, the old electric railway to Kifisiá, crosses the municipality with stations at Néa Ionía and Pefkákia, and its straight track is one of the clearest lines in the design.
A Néa Ionía map poster shows the texture of a refugee-built neighbourhood that became a full part of the city: close-set streets, local squares and the rail line cutting through. Because the district merges into neighbouring suburbs without a clear edge, the map feels like a detailed piece of a much larger city.
The old electric railway, now Metro Line 1, crosses Néa Ionía in a long straight line, the strongest single feature on the map and a link to central Athens.
The street grid was laid out as refugees from Asia Minor settled in the 1920s, and its dense, regular pattern still defines the neighbourhood.
Squares and small open spaces break up the tight blocks, marking neighbourhood centres and giving the poster light points within the dense urban fabric.

Koteā ko Néa Ionía
Néa Ionía carries a family history for many Greeks, whose grandparents arrived from Asia Minor and built a new life here. A map of these streets is a way to honour that story on a wall at home.
