Te mapa
New Rochelle lies in Westchester County, just north of the Bronx, and its southern edge is one of the most intricate coastlines near New York City. Necks of land reach into Long Island Sound, coves and harbours cut back between them, and a scatter of small islands sits offshore. From above, the city looks as though it were fraying into the water.
Inland the picture changes. A downtown of tighter blocks gathers around the railway line and the main avenues, and residential streets spread north in a looser, winding pattern that follows the hilly ground. Interstate 95 and the Hutchinson River Parkway cut long clean lines across the city, and a commuter rail line runs parallel to the shore toward Manhattan.
The city was founded in 1688 by Huguenot refugees and named after La Rochelle in France. Thomas Paine later lived here, and his cottage is still preserved. A New Rochelle map poster brings together the ragged coast and the steady inland streets, framing a place that has been both a harbour town and a commuter suburb.
Peninsulas, coves and marinas give the southern shore a lace-like edge. Printed in black and white, it is the most striking part of the whole composition.
Small islands lie just off the coast, some linked to the mainland by causeways, and they add detail at the edges of the water.
The commuter rail line and Interstate 95 run parallel to the shore. These strong diagonals separate the coastal neighbourhoods from the hillier northern streets.

Koteā ko New Rochelle
For anyone who commuted from here, sailed out of one of its harbours or grew up a few blocks from the Sound, a map of New Rochelle carries a lot of personal geography. The coastline alone makes it a strong piece for a study or a living room.
