Te mapa
Newton-le-Willows lies roughly midway between Liverpool and Manchester. Its map is shaped by transport history. The Liverpool and Manchester Railway, opened in 1830 as the first intercity passenger railway, crosses the town, and the Earlestown district grew up around it. The M6 runs just to the east, and the lines of road, rail and brook give the town its structure.
Just outside town, the railway crosses the Sankey Brook valley on the Sankey Viaduct, one of the early railway's major engineering works. Nearby Parkside is where MP William Huskisson was fatally struck by Stephenson's Rocket on the railway's opening day. Haydock Park Racecourse lies close to the north.
A Newton-le-Willows map poster traces these layers clearly. The railway runs in a long, confident line, terraced streets cluster around the older centres, and fields and brooks fill the gaps between neighbouring towns. It is a detailed yet quiet image of a place that sits at the start of the railway age.

West of town, the railway crosses the Sankey Brook valley on a viaduct from the line's earliest years. The valley and canal below add soft curves to the map.
The older Newton core and railway-era Earlestown form two distinct clusters of streets. Together they create a map with more than one centre.
