Te mapa
Ngawi sits on the western edge of East Java, where the Madiun River flows into the Bengawan Solo, Java's longest river. On the map the two waterways define the town. They meet in a clear confluence, and the streets spread out around it across flat, fertile land with rice fields reaching away on all sides.
At the confluence stands Benteng Van den Bosch, a Dutch fort built in the mid-nineteenth century to control river traffic. The wider regency is also known for Trinil, where Eugène Dubois found the fossils of Java Man in the early 1890s, one of the best-known discoveries in the study of human origins.
A Ngawi map poster shows a place shaped by water. The broad curves of the rivers contrast with the straighter lines of roads and the rail corridor, and the dense street network of the centre gradually opens into farmland. It is a strong, clear composition with a natural centre point.
The Bengawan Solo and the Madiun River join at the edge of town, forming the main natural shape of the map and explaining why Ngawi grew here.
The nineteenth-century Dutch fort stands close to where the rivers meet, a compact historic site set within the town's street pattern.
Flat, irrigated farmland surrounds the town, and its fine field divisions give the outer parts of the map a subtle, regular texture.
