Kisakata's paddy islets

Nikaho stretches along the Sea of Japan coast in the southwest of Akita Prefecture. The city was formed in 2005 by joining the towns of Konoura, Nikaho and Kisakata, and its map follows the shoreline as a narrow band of settlements, rail and coastal road. Inland the ground rises quickly toward Mount Chōkai, the volcano that dominates the southern horizon and feeds the rivers running down to the sea.
The Kisakata district holds one of the most unusual landscapes in the region. It was once a shallow lagoon scattered with small islands, admired by the poet Matsuo Bashō on his journey to the north. An earthquake in 1804 lifted the seabed, and the former islands now stand as wooded mounds in the middle of rice paddies, a pattern that shows clearly from above.
The electronics company TDK traces its roots to this area, and the city keeps a museum devoted to its history. A Nikaho map poster brings together the coastline, the scattered islets of Kisakata and the lines of rivers descending from the mountain, a composition that feels both rural and precise when drawn in black on white.

A long, gently curving shoreline runs along the western edge of the city, with the railway and coastal road tracing it closely through each settlement.
The ground climbs steadily to the southeast, where streams fan out from the volcano and cut narrow valleys down toward the coast and the farmland.

Nikaho appeals to people who know the quiet coast of Akita, travellers who followed Bashō's route north, or anyone drawn to landscapes where mountain, sea and farmland meet within a few kilometres. The map holds all three in one frame.
