Te mapa
Nong Khai lies on the southern bank of the Mekong in Thailand's northeast, directly across the river from Laos. From above, the town is long and narrow, with its main streets running parallel to the water and a riverside promenade lining the bank. The wide river fills the top of the map, and the Lao shore and the outskirts of Vientiane are visible on the far side.
A few kilometres west, the First Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge, opened in 1994, carries road and rail across the Mekong, making Nong Khai a main crossing point between the two countries. The town is also known for Sala Keoku, a park of huge concrete sculptures inspired by Buddhist and Hindu imagery, and for the Naga fireballs said to rise from the river each year.
A Nong Khai map poster gives the Mekong its full width. The river's broad curve, the long riverfront streets and the bridge's thin line across the water make a composition that is clear and horizontal, well suited to a wide frame and a calm room.
The town follows the river for several kilometres, and the wide band of water, with Laos on the opposite bank, dominates the map.
The bridge to Laos crosses the river west of the town centre as a single slim line, a small feature on the map with a large role in regional travel.
Main roads run alongside the river, with shorter cross streets linking them to the water, creating a long ladder-like pattern through the town.
