Norrtälje is the main town of Roslagen, north-east of Stockholm, on the coast of the Baltic. The town sits at the inner end of Norrtäljeviken, a long bay that reaches in from the archipelago, and the Norrtälje river runs through the centre before meeting the water.
The old town, with its low wooden houses and narrow streets, lies along the river, while newer neighbourhoods spread over the surrounding slopes. Norrtälje received town privileges in the seventeenth century and later became known for a rifle factory, as well as for summer visitors from Stockholm.
