Te mapa
North Bay lies on the north-east shore of Lake Nipissing, with the smaller Trout Lake just to the east. On the map, water defines the city on two sides. The downtown grid stands close to the Nipissing waterfront, and neighbourhoods climb the escarpment to the north, among rock, forest and lakes typical of the Canadian Shield.
The city grew as a railway town, and rail lines still cut clear curves through the street pattern. Highways 11 and 17 meet here, which is why North Bay has long been known as a gateway to the north. It is also home to Canadian Forces Base North Bay, known for its underground NORAD complex.
A North Bay map poster uses the contrast between open water and dense streets to great effect. The lakeshore curve, the downtown grid and the scattered northern neighbourhoods make a strong composition. It is a natural choice for people who grew up here, studied at the local college or university, or spent summers on the lake.
The long, curving shoreline forms the city's southern edge. Downtown sits right beside the water, making the lake a dominant open area on the map.
To the east, Trout Lake fills a narrow basin. The houses and cottages along its banks form a second, smaller shoreline.
Rail lines sweep through the city, marking its origins as a railway town. They cut distinct curves through the grid.

Koteā ko North Bay
North Bay is a place of lakes, winters and long drives north, and people who have lived here tend to remember it vividly. The map, with its two lakes, is instantly recognisable.
