Novi lies in Oakland County, northwest of Detroit, and its map follows the logic of the region: a grid of mile roads set roughly one mile apart. Ten Mile, Eleven Mile and Twelve Mile Roads cross Novi Road and its neighbours to form large square blocks. Grand River Avenue cuts diagonally through the pattern, following an old route toward Lansing.
Inside each square, the story changes. Subdivisions fill the spaces with looping streets and cul-de-sacs, and small lakes and wetlands leave blank patches in between. Walled Lake takes up a wide oval in the north of the city. Near the southern edge, I-96 and I-696 meet in a large interchange, and the Twelve Oaks Mall sits beside the freeway as a broad retail landmark.
The name has a well-known local legend. It is said to come from a stagecoach or railway stop numbered six, No. VI, though historians treat the story as unproven.
