Novy Oskol lies in Belgorod Oblast in southwestern Russia, on the Oskol River. It was founded in the seventeenth century as a fortress on the defensive line that protected Muscovy's southern frontier. The river still shapes the town's map. It curves past the centre, and its floodplain meadows and oxbows spread across the lowland beside it.
The town sits on the higher bank, where streets form a fairly regular pattern of blocks around the historic centre. Lower down, the land near the river is left more open, with water meadows, wooded patches and old channels. Roads and a railway cross the valley and head out across the region.

The town grew from a seventeenth-century frontier fortress, and its centre sits on the higher bank above the river, laid out in regular blocks.
