Okhtyrka lies in Sumy region in northeastern Ukraine, on the Vorskla river. From above, the river and its wide floodplain run along one side of the town, with meadows, oxbows and channels. The streets rise onto higher ground and form a mostly regular pattern, surrounded by farmland on all sides.
The town dates back to the seventeenth century, when it was founded as a fortress and became the centre of a Sloboda Cossack regiment. Its baroque Intercession Cathedral is one of its best-known buildings. The area is also associated with oil and gas extraction, which developed during the twentieth century.
