Te mapa
Okotoks lies on the Sheep River just south of Calgary, in the foothills region of southern Alberta. It has grown quickly from a small town into a sizeable community, while keeping a historic downtown near the river. Its name is generally traced to a Blackfoot word for rock, a reference to the huge boulder that sits on the prairie west of the town.
That boulder, the Okotoks Erratic or Big Rock, is one of the largest glacial erratics in the world, carried from the Rocky Mountains by ice and left alone in open grassland. On a map the town itself shows a clear structure: the river winding through, an older grid near the centre and newer suburbs with curving streets and crescents spreading outward.
Okotoks is also home to the Drake Landing Solar Community, a neighbourhood that stores summer heat from solar collectors to warm homes through the winter. An Okotoks map poster captures the river valley, the historic core and the growing edges of the town, a portrait of a prairie community shaped by landscape and change.
The river winds through the town in a series of bends, bordered by green space and pathways, and gives the poster a strong natural line.
Near the river, the older centre follows a compact grid, a more orderly pattern that contrasts with the curving streets of the newer neighbourhoods.
Residential areas built in recent decades spread outward in loops and crescents, giving the edges of the map a fluid, textured look typical of Alberta towns.

Koteā ko Okotoks
Okotoks is a place many families chose as a home within reach of Calgary and the mountains, and a map of it marks that choice. The river and the mix of old grid and new crescents make it a well-balanced print.
