Te mapa
Ōmura spreads along the eastern shore of Ōmura Bay, a large, almost enclosed body of water in the middle of Nagasaki Prefecture. On a map, the city occupies a strip of low ground between the calm bay and the hills to the east. Streets run parallel to the shore, and rivers cut down from the higher ground to the water.
The most distinctive feature lies just offshore. Nagasaki Airport was built on an island in the bay and opened in 1975, often cited as the world's first offshore airport. A long bridge links it to the mainland. In town, Ōmura Park, on the site of the former castle, is well known for its cherry blossoms.
An Ōmura map poster has a striking composition: the long runway laid out on its island, the broad smooth expanse of the bay, and the city lining the shore. The contrast between the engineered airport and the natural curves of the coastline gives the design unusual clarity.

A wide, sheltered bay opens west of the city. Its calm, nearly enclosed waters take up much of the frame and set the tone of the poster.
Ōmura Park occupies the grounds of the former castle near the shore. It is known across Kyushu for its cherry trees in spring.

Koteā ko Ōmura
Many travellers first see Nagasaki Prefecture from Ōmura's airport, while locals know the city as a quiet home on the bay. Either way, the map captures a place defined by water and a remarkable runway.
