Te mapa
Omutninsk is in the northeast of Kirov Oblast, on the Omutnaya river, in heavily forested country west of the Urals. The town grew up around an eighteenth-century ironworks, and its plan still shows it. A dam turned the river into a pond, and the streets and the metallurgical plant spread along its shores.
Like many Russian works towns, Omutninsk has an industrial centre with residential districts around it. Low wooden houses sit alongside Soviet-era blocks. Beyond the edge of town, forest fills almost everything, with roads and rail lines running through it.
An Omutninsk map poster shows the pattern of a classic works settlement. The pond is a bold pale shape in the middle. The plant and streets surround it, and the dense forest leaves wide open margins, so the town reads as a self-contained island in the woods.
A pond formed by damming the Omutnaya lies at the heart of the town. It is the strongest natural shape on the poster.
The old ironworks site and its buildings sit beside the dam and the water. They give the map a large, solid industrial block.
Dense woodland surrounds the town on every side. It leaves broad open areas crossed only by a few roads and railway lines.
