Paço de Arcos sits on the northern shore of the Tagus estuary in the municipality of Oeiras, where the river widens toward the Atlantic. Its map is defined by parallel lines along the water: the promenade, the Cascais railway and the coastal road known as the Marginal. Behind them, streets climb gently inland into denser residential neighbourhoods.
The town takes its name from the historic palace of Paço de Arcos, which still stands near the waterfront. For generations it was a fishing village and a summer retreat for Lisbon families; today it is largely a commuter town, with the train reaching the capital in a short ride and a seafront walk running along the estuary.
