Te mapa
Padangsidempuan lies in the highlands of southern North Sumatra, in a valley surrounded by hills. The town centre sits on the lower ground, and its streets follow the valley's shape. Outlying neighbourhoods spread along roads that climb towards the higher land. On a map, it appears as a compact settlement with green slopes all around.
The town is a centre for the Angkola Batak region. It is often called the city of salak, after the snakefruit grown widely in the surrounding hills. Main roads connect it to Sibolga on the west coast and to other towns along the Trans-Sumatran routes, making it a stopping point for travellers crossing the region.
A Padangsidempuan map poster shows a town defined by its setting. There is a dense centre on the valley floor, with roads branching outward and thinning as they climb. Hills close in on every side. In black and white, the town looks like a small, tight cluster with open country all around it.
The main streets fill the valley floor. Their direction follows the land, and the densest blocks sit on the flattest ground.
The slopes around the town are known for snakefruit orchards. On the map they form open land beyond the last streets.
Routes towards Sibolga and along Sumatra leave the valley in several directions. They give the town its branching outline.
