Te mapa
Palmerston is a planned city in Australia's Northern Territory, a short drive southeast of Darwin. It was developed from the 1980s as a satellite city. It borrowed its name from Palmerston, the original name of the settlement that became Darwin. The map shows its planned origins clearly, as a series of suburbs rather than a single centre.
From above, the city is a study in late twentieth-century suburban design. Loops, crescents and cul-de-sacs are arranged within larger arterial roads, with green reserves and drainage corridors threading between neighbourhoods. The Stuart Highway runs along its edge, connecting it to Darwin and the country beyond.
A Palmerston map poster reduces all of this to elegant line work. The curving streets become an almost decorative pattern, set against open space. It is a portrait of a young city with a distinctly Top End character.
Neighbourhoods are built from crescents, loops and cul-de-sacs. They create a flowing, ornamental pattern that looks quite unlike an older gridded city.
Reserves and drainage channels run between suburbs, needed for heavy wet-season rain. They show on the map as open bands between the streets.
The highway runs past the city toward Darwin and south through the continent. It forms a long, confident line at the edge of the print.
