Te mapa
Parangipettai, known historically as Porto Novo, is on the Coromandel Coast of Tamil Nadu, at the mouth of the Vellar River. Portuguese and later Dutch traders used it as a port, and the town gave its name to the Battle of Porto Novo, fought nearby in 1781 during the Second Anglo-Mysore War.
On the map, the town is a compact cluster of lanes between the river estuary and the open coast. The water shapes almost everything here: the long straight beach line, the widening estuary and, a short way south, the maze of channels in the Pichavaram mangrove forest.
The coast also supports marine research, with Annamalai University's Centre of Advanced Study in Marine Biology based here. A Parangipettai map poster shows a small town held in by water on two sides, where the most striking shapes are drawn by the estuary and the shoreline rather than by the streets.
The river widens as it reaches the sea, forming a broad estuary whose outline dominates the map and separates the town from the land further south.
A long, nearly straight coastline runs along the Bay of Bengal, giving the composition a clean edge that contrasts with the dense lanes of the old port.
South of town, the Pichavaram mangroves break the coast into a fine network of creeks and islets, one of the most intricate patterns anywhere on this stretch of shore.

Porto Novo has a longer history than its size suggests, and a map of it appeals to people with family here, researchers who have worked on this coast, and anyone interested in old trading ports along the Bay of Bengal.
