Te mapa
Parque das Nações stretches for several kilometres along the Tagus estuary in eastern Lisbon. It was built on former industrial and port land for the 1998 World Exposition. On a map it reads as a long, narrow district with a planned street pattern, framed by the river on one side and the railway on the other.
Several Expo buildings are still in use, including the Oceanário, the Pavilhão de Portugal and Oriente station, designed by Santiago Calatrava. At the district's northern end, the Vasco da Gama Bridge, one of the longest in Europe, leaves the shore and crosses the estuary toward Montijo and Alcochete.
A Parque das Nações map poster shows modern urban planning at its clearest: a long riverside promenade, regular blocks, generous parks and a clean break at the railway line. The wide pale estuary and the start of the bridge give it a coastal quality that is unusual in a map of a city district.
A continuous riverside edge runs the full length of the district, and the docks and gardens along the water give the map a clean, strong boundary.
The bridge leaves the northern end of the district and stretches out across the estuary, a single fine line that adds scale and direction to the composition.
Calatrava's station sits at the district's inland edge, where the railway and the metro meet. It forms a hinge between the planned riverside and the older city behind it.
