Patzicía is in the department of Chimaltenango, in Guatemala's central highlands, west of the capital. It is mainly a Kaqchikel Maya town, and the surrounding land is farmed intensively. Vegetables grown here are shipped well beyond the region. From above, the town is compact and clearly ordered, with a grid of blocks that goes back to the colonial pattern of highland towns.
The grid is the main feature of the map. Streets meet at right angles around a central square and spread outward in even steps.
